Read this entry!  Persuade/dissuade me!

Well first off, screwing around on the innertubes last night, I found the biggest mistake PC ever that I bought in 1997.  Nostalgia for computers for me is like porn for all others.  I can't help myself.

Here's the specs:
  • 166MHz Cyrix MediaGX processor
  • 16MB memory (14MB available), expandable to 128MB
  • Low Profile Desktop
  • Integrated XpressGRAPHICS
  • Integrated XpressAUDIO
  • 1.0GB EIDE Western Digital 4536 RPM HD
  • 12X ATAPI/EIDE CD-ROM
  • Etc., etc.
It was SUCH a piece of crap because it was a Power Spec PC.  With an Elitegroup momboard.  And a Cyrix processor.  I still have all my receipts/returns/repairs.  I was returning and repairing this computer for so long that the last one I got (before finally bitching and getting my money back) was actually a 180 MHz machine.

Oi.

Anyway, I got some RAM for Christmas for my current rig.  I also got a new video card.  Since my motherboard is from 2005 I can't use the video card on a new momboard and obviously the RAM either.  The problem is the computer really doesn't like the high density 3 gigs of RAM and performs equally well with my old 1 gig.

So I'm thinking of biting the bullet, spoiling myself now that I'm working and getting new guts.

TECHY PEEPS - you know who you are - does this sound good to you?

Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor
Motherboard - GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
Memory - Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 Desktop Memory
Vid Card - HIS Hightech H483FN512P Radeon HD 4830 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card

And of course a new DVD/CD combo thing.

It would be such a ridiculous upgrade to what I have right now.  The motherboard supports ATI crossfireX and the video card supports it too, so there's an inexpensive upgrade option in a couple years.

I'd be keeping my same case.

I'm currently running:

A WHOLE GIG OF RAM with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ processor, NVIDIA GeForce 6200 - AGP.

I can get it all for $464.
